Educational iMac revealed, Safari Market Share Booms [Jul. 5th, 2006|06:52 pm]

[music |"How You Ever Gonna Know" - Garth Brooks]

Apple has unveiled it's replacment for the eMac, the last CRT-using Apple machine. The replacment is a special configuration of the 17" iMac we already know. This version comes with 1.83 Intel Core Duo, the iSight, iLife '06, a combo drive, 512MB of RAM (upgradable to 2gigs), and a HD of 160gigs. As far as the software goes, there is virtually no difference between the average consumer's iMac and the edu-iMac. It is available immediatly in Apple's Education Store.

Safari's Market Share has boomed by 75% to reach 3.19% market share world-wide. Safari still holds the number three spot of most-used browsers. Most are saying this is due to programs such as Boot Camp and Parralels, drawing more to the Mac Platform.

Design filings made by Apple suggest that they could abandon the Click Wheel in future iPod designs. A few of the more interesting designs feature designs focused on the iPod nano's enclosure. One of these strongly resembles that of a phone, the other has what appears to be a cross on it. It's speculated that this cross could be some kind of game controller. There were four other designs featuring the nano, that featured a trackpad similar to that on a Macbook, a vertical scrolling strip, and two oblong controls. There are also designs that show nothing at all in place of the Click Wheel, strengthening the rumor of voice-commands on future iPods. Are any of these iPods we'll see? Only time will tell...

Lastly, I don't know if any of you know of the band, but recently, Rascal Flatts released thier 4th album, Me And My Gang. The album is the 3rd album from Rascal Flatt's to hit the top of the all-genre list on Billboard. It is also on iTunes with a digital booklet and is at a special price of $7.99 for 13 tracks.

Also, selfless plugging, I've been experimenting with iWeb, Garageband, and iPhoto and I now have the result: My Website! Go on haead, look at it, and give me some feedback on the site, and my Podcast!

iPod factory passes, Civ 4 for the Mac ships [Jun. 26th, 2006|09:15 pm]

iPod Factory Passes Inspection

The iPod factory that has been in the news as of late has passed inspection by a "special team" sent by Apple. Foxconn, the owner of the factory, says that there was simply a mis-understanding between just how many extra hours were asked of by the employees by a Tiwanese reporter, as well as the British publication which started this whole debocale.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV Ships

Gamers, start your coffee makers. The latest installment in Sid Meier's addictive global conquest game, Civilization has started shipping for the Mac in North America. For a look at this new game, MacWorld has an article just for you. It is Universal and will work on Mac OS X version 10.3 (Panther) or higher.

Apple extends warranty for problematic eMacs

The eMac is still a concern of Apple's, as it would appear. On Friday, Apple announced a worldwide eMac Repair Extension Program for those eMacs showing video and power troubles.

Affected systems are described as those with "scrambled or distorted video, no video or no power" (Hang on, if they have no power, how will they know this is out there?)

It is reprtedly a hardware issue that affects eMacs with 1Ghz or 1.25 Ghz G4 processors and are constructed between April 2004 and June 2005. The serial number may have the following prefixes and be prone to the issue:
G8412xxxxxx - G8520xxxxxx, YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx or VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx

These codes are inside your CD Drawer and are viewable while in the "eject" position.

If you fit this crieteria, you are to try to bring your mac to a Genius Bar or call in and you may get it repaired for free, even if it's out of warranty.

And finally, I need some help in finding software. I'm looking for something to help me out in learning Music Theory, but I'm not finding anything that strikes as very reliable. I would prefer that the application be Universal.

One more thing, has any one messed with iWeb much? Does anyone know just how customizable it is, or do you have to use a pre-designed template?

Now I have heard of everything... [Jun. 20th, 2006|08:01 pm]

[music |Million Dollar Baby on DVD]

This news story is so out there... I never would have seen this coming if I even had a roadmap.

50 Cent is in negotiations with Steve Jobs to produce a line of cheap computers aimed at inner-city residents, according to Forbes Magazine.

50 Cent told Forbes, "I'm creating a foundation that will be around for a long time, because fame can come and go or get lost in the lifestyle and the splurging. I never got into it for the music. I got into it for the business."

Seems as though my personal impressions of the famed rapper have been ill-aimed. He seems to have a very good head on his shoulders.

ALso, for those of you into movie-making, one of the programs used in the Oscar-award winning* movie, King Kong, has now gone universal. Shake 4.1 has also been lowered in pricing, down to $499 (US). I'm not a movie-making buff myself, but Shake is a digital compositioner. This would be an excellent tool, especially if you already own Final Cut.

Now surely, you all have heard about the insinuation made by a London newspaper. Well, on Monday Apple began an audit of the iPod factory that allegedly has sweatshop-like conditions. Currently, I think this is just a disgruntled person's jab at Apple for whatever reason. One of Apple's bragging rights is that it is constantly in strive for acceptance and equal treatment of all human beings. The HRC recognized this recently by giving Apple a score of 100. For scores on other companies in various categories go to this URL: http://www.hrc.org/buyersguide/buyersguide.htm#Computers

In more personal news, I have three Apple products arriving by next Thursday (June 29th). They are, .Mac, the iPod Universal Dock, and a 17"iMac with a gig of ram and 250 gig HD. If you can't tell, I am very excited for this! I will be sure to tell you all about my experiences, as it will be my first personal Mac.

Ads a-plenty, Washington State fines Apple [Jun. 13th, 2006|08:30 pm]

[music |Whose Line Is It Anyway?]

Three new "Get A Mac" ads have arisen. They stay true to the previous six in the style and actors used and are now viewable on TV and on-line. The three new ads are dubbed "Out of the Box" (for no-hassle use on Day 1), "Touche" (touting Boot Camp), and "Work vs. Home" (for easy creation of creative projects about life). Personally, I think Touche is lacking, but Out of The Box is very well done.

Apple has been fined $100,000 dollars by the state of Washington for failing to register as a service provider from 2000-2004. Because of this, AppleCare was, for a time, unavailable in Washington State. Apple has since registered and is able to give AppleCare once more to Washington State customers.

This is an interesting widget that lets you view images from space on-demand from robots. I'm unsure if these robots are real or fictional... but the images look pretty good.

Week In Review [May. 21st, 2006|10:47 am]
The Cult Of Mac

This week was a flurry with various bits of Apple news.

First and foremost, the realese of the iBook replacement, the MacBook. Some people are wondering if the $200 price tag for a black color is really worth it, some are complaining about the integrated video card, but not much else. So far, all reports are stating that it is indeed MUCH faster than the iBook and PowerBook G4s, except when working in Photoshop and playing Unreal Tournament 2004 (the FPS in Unreal crawled to about 20 on the new MacBooks largely due to the integrated video card). The new macbooks at the least cost $1,099 (US), but considering that you get the duo core, isight, front row, ilife 06 and such, I think the price is plenty justified.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you surely know abouot the newest addition to the Apple Retail Store family, the 24-hour location on New York's popular Fifth Avenue. As Trent of pinkisthenewblog.com put it, ironiclly, it has a lot of "windows". The store opened up Friday and is the first 24-hour, 365-day store for apple. In the first 24 hours, 24 macbooks were given out, and people were given only about 15 minutes in the store largely due to the masses clamoring to get in (save for the wee hours of the morning). The store sits in a courtyard with the entraced marked by a glass cube with the apple logo suspended in midair. A spiral staricase leads you underground where there are 100 Macs and 200 iPods on display, a 41-foot Genius Bar, iPod Bar and Studio help desk, and about 350 employees... employed. It's unknown if this format will expand to any other locations.

In the legal department, Creative, makers of the Zen line of MP3 Players, have sued Apple regarding the "Zen patent" granted to them. The Zen Patent is about a navigation and Menu set up for an MP3 Player. The patent was sent in during 2001 and was granted in October of 2005. Most are calling this legal action ridiculous and Creative's stock has plummeted as a result. Also this week, Apple sued Creative over infringment of four Apple-held patents. Apple has not come forward with what these patents are, but this could easily mean the end of Creative if Apple's case wins.

Microsoft (or the evil empire, take your pick) has launched it's competition for iTunes called Urge. Urge was announced a few years ago in collaboration with MTV. Along with this, Windows Media Player 11, and the new iRiver Clix MP3 Player, some are saying it's a 1-2-3 punch to iTunes and the iPod. Oddly enough, we won't find out until WMP11 comes out. Which is the same time as Vista. So, in short, we have a long time to wait to see.

I have to go, but I'll be back later with a widget later in the day!

MacBook comes out [May. 16th, 2006|08:01 pm]
The Cult Of Mac

[Tags|, , , , , , ]

So I'm a bad person. Not updating this in about 13 days. Sorry about that! :-(

Anyways, as some may know, the new MacBook has finally come out! It features the iSight camera, Front Row, the Magsafe Power Adapter, 13" widescreen LCDs, a new keyboard configuration, and comes in white and black. Techniclly speaking, they have at least 1.83GHz Intel Core Duos, 512MB of RAM and 60Gigs on the HD. The whole package is just a little thicker than the MacBook Pro, by 0.03 inches.

Also being trumpted on Apple's main page, is that rhe Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York will open May 19th at 6pm. All you'll see of this location is a single black box. The store is actually located underneath the streets of New York and is going to be the first 24-hour location. I can imagine that something big will be given away at this event, and it is speculated that Steve Jobs might even make an appearance.

Apple pushes past Dell... again... [May. 3rd, 2006|07:50 pm]
The Cult Of Mac

[Tags|, , , , , , , , ]

Apple has managed to pull past Dell in overall marketcap value for the second time. The first time was in January shortly after the keynote. It's believed that the new Mac ad campaign and Vista being delayed YET AGAIN are the reasons.

Speaking of which, Vista has been estimated to be pushed back further, into Q2 of 2007. That woould mean an April-June release, a full two years after the original 2005 release date. OS X Leopard however is still on track for a late 2006/early 2007 release.

Having troubles with your MacBook Pro's battery? Apple has placed a very silent recall of batteries. The issue only involves those MBPs that have a serial number up to W8608. Not every MBP in that category is in affect. This is a problem resolved through AppleCare. If you fear for battery troubles on any MBP, iBook or Powerbook model, Coconut Battery 2.3 Beta 7 has been released CB is a utility meant to diagnose battery issues on notebooks.

New iLife/Mac ad [May. 1st, 2006|08:23 pm]
The Cult Of Mac

[Tags|, , , , , , ]

There's a new Mac ad out there this week, and it highlights the iLife app Suite that comes with every new Mac. In it, a man dressed casually represents the Mac, while an older man in a suit represents PCs. The older man comments that his iPod syncs up nicely with his windows machine and iTunes. Our man then says that the entire iLife Suite (Garageband, iDVD, iWeb, iPhoto, iMovie, and iTunes) is the same way and they all merge in with one another. The older man then says he has such programs too... like... calculator... and clock... Cheesy? Maybe. but it's nice to see more Mac Commercials out there. Unfortunatly, Apple hasn't put the commercial on the site, to my knowledge. More than likly, it's on YouTube already.

Also, Remember the "peace talks" of sorts between Apple and the record companies? Well, for four labels a deal has been made for the flat rate of $.99 to continue.

This Widget, DashCast, allows you to view not only Photocasts from iPhoto, but also Photostreams from Flickr.com. This will update automaticlly, just as iPhoto would for new Photocasts. It'll even do so while Dashboard is running.
